*“Working Equitation promotes the correct training and development of a horse for fieldwork. Training emphasizes the development of true collection by riding the horse from the hind quarters forward. This skill leads to collection and at the upper levels, the amazing lead changes that this sport is known for…The lower levels develop your foundation, each level then builds your skills. If you wish to put in the work, you can reach the Advanced and Master’s level with flying lead changes and one-handed riding! Internationally, many countries compete in Working Equitation. Each country preserves their equitation traditions and culture by dressing in their traditional tack and attire. In the United States, you may show in a variety of tack and attire. It should be of one kind: western, vaquero, dressage, hunt seat, etc. Any breed of horse and level of rider is welcome.”1 *“You can bring the horse, the tack and the training you already have and simply add another layer of expertise. At its most basic, working equitation assesses a rider’s skill and the progression of a horse’s training. A relative newcomer on the world-equestrian stage, working equitation debuted in the United States in 2008. But its origins date back to the mid-1990s when it was developed in southern Europe as a way to preserve and promote the riding traditions of Italy, France, Portugal and Spain, as well as to showcase the horses typically bred and used there for ranch work."2 *“Horses of every breed and size, including gaited horses are excelling in the sport. Unlike many other disciplines, there are no restrictions to saddle type and show attire allows for personal style. A variety of bits, bitless bridles, and hackamores can be used. Working Equitation combines the fundamentals of dressage with the precision of riding through a series of various obstacles. The results are horses and riders that achieve remarkable relationships by doing something that is enormously fun.”3 1Crist, Kelli Paulson, and Tarrin Warren. “The How-to Guide for Working Equitation.” Working Equitation Handbook, 24 June 2019, www.workingequitationhandbook.com/. 2Daugirda , Sandra Adair. “What Is Working Equitation?” Dressage Today, 5 Mar. 2015, dressagetoday.com/lifestyle/working-equitation-27166/. 3Hayes, Stephanie. “Working Equitation, the Sport I Didn’t Know I Needed.” Horsenetwork.com, 18 Mar. 2020, horsenetwork.com/2020/03/working-equitation-the-sport-i-didnt-know-i-needed/.
